While our Fringe dates might be over we did still have a morning to kill and I had seen advertised an exhibition at the National museum of Scotland called “Rip it up: the Story of Scottish Pop” that I fancied visiting, so we did.
The museum itself turned out to be a beautiful place. Light and airy. Not cluttered at all like some museums and the exhibits were well presented. They even had a small selection of “Scottish” F1 cars, although the links were a bit tenuous at best.
However, we weren’t there for any of that, we were there for the Story of Scottish Pop! This was a paid exhibition (£10 a head please) and charted the music from Lonnie Donegan to the Bay City Rollers to Simple Minds and Big Country right up to the present day and the likes of Biffy Clyro. All of this was told through short videos, artifacts loaned by the artists and the obligatory info boards.
It was also an opportunity to build up a listening list for later too to include the likes of John Martyn, Average White Band, Ultravox, K T Tunstall, Franz Ferdinand, Biffy Clyro and Mogwai.
It was a reminder of just how much great music has come from such a small country. It was an enjoyable exhibition but I’m not sure that it was worth the £10 entry fee – especially as there was nothing from either James Grant or his band Love and Money.
So that’s it for the festival for another year. We have seen a great variety of great things and all bar one were terrific. We’re already planning our next trip…
