The Bucket List

No, not a review of the film starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, but a list of places and things I want to do. I seem to have mentioned it so often in these pages that I thought I would publish it.

What is a Bucket List

You may be asking yourself just what is a bucket list? Well, here is a slightly depressing definition for you:

A bucket list is a curated collection of experiences, achievements, or goals that a person hopes to accomplish before they “kick the bucket” (a slang term for dying).

You will see from the list below that it really is all about travel and not about “finding myself” as I think it’s a bit late for that and it’s a load of twaddle. If you are looking for more ideas along that line there is a long list here.

How do I decide what goes on the list?

Broadly, things on my list fall into two categories:

  • Places to visit, usually cities but can be counties too
  • Special events and cultural highlights.

People (mainly my wife) often ask me how I find a seemingly endless list of places to visit. The answer is that I am signed up to multiple mailing lists for various museums and council events and find things that way.

I am signed up to all the major museums in London, Oxford and Reading plus places like the Historic Dockyards and Fleet Air Arm Museum. Not only do these keep me up-to-date on their events but quite often they cover partner events too.

That covers a lot of specific events but there are also places we want to go too. For example, every capitol city in Europe.

The List(s)

Clearly this is a movable feast as I am constantly ticking things off and adding new items to the lists.

Also, these are my lists, it isn’t yours so there will be things on it that don’t interest you I’m sure – go create your own list!
