Danube 2022 – Day Three – Krems

Today we visited Krems, Austria a place too small to have its own entry in the walking app. It appeared to be nothing much more than a village so I was surprised when I looked it up on Wikipedia and found that it has twice the population of Wantage, the place I was born.

Where this population all were I do not know as it was very, very quiet with hardly anyone about. Actually, that has very much been a feature of the places we have visted so far in that there has been hardly anyone to be seen – which makes getting a clear picture much easier!

Anyway, Krems looked a lovely place with two attractive churches so we got off the boat for a wander. The two churches were literally next to each other, almost within touching distance which made me wonder whether they were in competition with each other and the one with the best spire would win the most congregation. It’s almost like the peacock showing off his tail feathers to attract a mate.

The church on the right in the picture below has a tower design that we have seen repeated again and again across Austria. I am not sure the denomination but I will have to find out the background behind them as I haven’t seen them anywhere else on our travels.

The other thing that seems to be popular in Austria is a christmas tree mounted on top of a very tall pole in the centre of the town. I suspected (and a quick search confirmed) that there are erected as part of the May day celebrations.

The latest in the boat saga was announced tonight when we were told that we would not be docking in Passau as planned as that would mean the boat would struggle to get to Linz in time for its maintenance. Instead we were going to land at Engelszell and be bused to Passau.
