Croatia 2024 – Day Three – Split, Croatia

The first stop on this cruise is Split, Croatia a pretty city that attracts Game of Thrones devotees for reasons I cannot explain having never seen it.

Uber Wars

The first challenge was getting from the ship to the town, a relatively short distance but too far for my parents to manage. No problem I thought, we’ll get an Uber. I looked on the app and found cars close but the pick-up point was not. Cars weren’t allowed into the port so you had to walk for ten minutes to get to the pick-up point. We arrived there and our car arrived shortly afterwards and parked right in front of the taxi rank. One of the drivers from the rank came over and started remonstrating with our driver. I can understand his frustration but (I guess) Uber has permission to operate in Split and it is so much easier than negotiating with a local taxi. You know how much it is going to cost before you ride, you pay by card, no cash required, and, crucially, you can call them to wherever you are rather than having to find a rank.

Google Photos Magic Erase

We did all the sights but as we’ve been before I’m not going to describe them here – you can read about our previous visit here. What I will say is that I got to try out Google Photos Magic Erase and was impressed with how well it works.

The photo on the left is myself and some annoying tourists just coming into shot behind. I opened the image in Google Photos and was given the option to use Magic Erase to find people to remove from an image automatically. It did this quickly and with a tap on the shaded area it identified the annoying tourists disappeared – just like magic! You can see the resulting image on the right.

I was impressed with the automatic removal but doing areas manually was less successful nevertheless I look forward to this arriving on iOS on May 15th.

TikTok

We went to the theatre in the evening to see the night’s entertainment which today was pop hits through the ages. At one point the voiceover said that the next song we’d probably have heard from TikTok and, maybe, we’d even done the dance moves in the back garden. I looked around the room and decided that most wouldn’t have heard of TikTok let alone have the flexibility to do any dance moves! Talk about not knowing your audience.
